How Long Does Razor Burns Last

Razor bumps are small, raised bumps in the skin that occur after shaving when strands of hair curl back on themselves and grow into the skin instead of outward from the hair follicle. They become irritated and even become infected and develop into pimples. Picking on razor bumps can result in scaring and pigmentation changes.

More often, razor bumps may only last for about 10 days unless they are picked or irritated, which can make them last a longer time. It is usually best to leave them alone and allow them to heal naturally. This natural healing process will usually last about a week when pimples like bumps will begin to disappear on their own. Gentle exfoliation and treating with chemical exfoliating agents like salicylic acid may help speed up the process.

Sometimes you can prevent razor bumps by taking a hot shower or bath to soften the hair, or use thick shaving creams and always shave in the direction of hair growth using short strokes.

How to Prevent Razor Burn

Generally to prevent razor bumps on your skin, you need to understand the factors behind the development of the bumps. The measure to prevent them entails good shaving techniques and habits. Some of the measures to be taken include the following:

  1. Shave with sharp blades

The blades to used in shaving should be sharp enough to avoid tugging and pulling. Always replace the blades in case they have become blunt, worn out or dull.

  1. Moisturize the skin after shaving

Always dry carefully the shaven areas and apply a moisturizer. This helps to open up the hair follicles and reduce irritation and redness which are as a result of shaving. This prevents ingrown hairs and the emergence of razor bumps on the affected area.

  1. Do not shave rapidly

Always avoid shaving rapidly to discourage emergence of razor bumps. Shaving rapidly is likely to cause tugging as the hair is being cut and pulling as the blades move rapidly. This is likely to cause an irritation on the skin involved, hence development of razor bumps.

  1. Shave when the hair is a bit long

Avoid regular shaving because this increases the chances of development of razor bumps. It’s good to shave at an interval of 14 days.

  1. Use chemical depilatory for hair removal

You can prevent razor bumps by opting to use chemical depilatory. This is the use of chemical for hair removal.  This method eliminates shaving and waxing, which are the main causes of razor bumps. Chemical depilatories are readily available in different forms, including aerosol, roll-on, gel lotion, cream and powder forms. Some of the common chemical hair removal available over-the-counter include Veet, Nair and Magic Shave.

  1. Rinse with cold water after Shaving

Immediately after shaving rinse the area shaved with cold water to prevent razor bumps. Cold water lowers the temperature of your skin. This causes the tiny muscles around the hair follicles contact and closes the pores, preventing bacteria from invading the shaved skin.

  1. Exfoliate your skin before and after shaving

Exfoliate your skin before and after shaving to get rid of dead skin on it, hence preventing razor bumps. The presence of dead skin on the skin may clog the hair follicles leading to ingrown hairs that cause razor bumps.

  1. Shave along the grain

Always shave in the direction of hair growth to prevent razor bumps. Hair on any part of the body usually grows with grains. Although shaving against the grains removes all hair, it irritates your skin so much. Moreover, shaving hair too close to the skin can lead to ingrown hairs. This is so because the hair follicle may get clogged forcing the hair to curl or coil under the skin as it grows. Therefore shaving along the grain reduces irritation and prevents clogged hair, which may lead to razor bumps.

  1. Don’t apply too much pressure while shaving
